There is a large number of low-cost, low-frills hotels near Wat Pho in Bangkok. Being near Khaosan Road, the area is popular with backpackers and people traveling on a budget.
Located in the old center of Bangkok, the are contains many beautiful temples that are on the must see list of many visitors to Thailand. Wat Pho is perhaps the biggest and most well-known of the temples and contains a huge golden reclining Buddha. Wat Pho is also the most prestigious place in the world to learn Thai massage. You will see signs posted at many massage places throughout Thailand stating that their staff were trained at Wat Pho. If the claims are true, then you can be assured of an excellent massage by a true professional.
The Grand Palace is also nearby, allowing you to easily fit a number of the major Bangkok sights into one day of sightseeing.
Hotels near Wat Pho can be had for as little as USD14 a night, but you generally get what you pay for. Also it has to be said that the staff at a lot of the places in this area see a lot of poorly groomed, not particularly well behaved foreigners and as such can be seen as not as friendly as people in other places of Thailand.
I would highly recommend not riding in tuk tuk in this area as you are bound to pay more than is really necessary. Take a cab when traveling to this area to save yourself some money and be more comfortable. One last thing: if you are on your way to a temple, palace or any other attraction in the area, do not believe anyone who comes up to you and "helpfully" informs you that the attraction is closed for a religious holiday or a private ceremony. It will be a scam to try to get you to ride a tuk tuk to a gem store or some other place where the driver will get a commission or kickback. A similar ploy is a plea from the driver that if you just go and look in the store he will receive a coupon for gas from the store, thus helping his life greatly. Trust me, just smile politely and walk away.
